Malden Season 1 Prelude CHAOS ON MALDEN BACKSTORY

The island of Malden is agricultural-centric, with common exports including wine products, olives and dairy goods. Malden is particularly famous for its goat cheese produced in the town of La Pessagne. It is considered a delicacy both domestically and abroad, with their products becoming well-known even in the Kingdom of Sahrani. Malden also relies heavily on tourism. There are many picturesque sights and beautiful beaches, while numerous places of worship attract significant numbers of tourists and pilgrims annually.

Conditions on the island nation have been deteriorating for some time. Ties between Malden and the U.S. began to collapse with the onset of the global financial crisis in 2007. In the following years changes in the balance of power throughout the world combined with the onset of an economic depression throughout Western nations ended US involvement with Malden. In 2020 a US Base Realignment and Closure Committee recommendation led to the hasty and poorly planned U.S. withdrawal from its bases on the island.

The resulting vacuum led to a downturn in the island economy and increases in crime. The Kingdom of Sahrani began to issue threats to the Malden Island Governing Council over the deteriorating conditions on the island including the increasingly hostile treatment of Sahranians visiting Malden for business and tourism. Princess Isabella also established high tariffs on Malden wine and cheese products destined for The Kingdom and secondary tariffs for any other nation trading with Malden. The rhetoric continued to escalate between the two sides and then Sahrani, who recently established the Province of Botana in the Federal Republic of Fapovo (shout out to  IceBreakr) dispatched an expeditionary force to put more pressure on Malden.  

There was a growing concern among the Malden elite about the need to take action to deter a potential Sahrani invasion and also to prevent civil unrest due to worsening conditions on the island. Eventually the Malden Island Governing Council issued orders to the Malden Defense Forces (MDF) and island law enforcement agencies to tighten control over the island and citizens. Unfortunately these measures became increasingly violent and tyrannic in an effort to control the population. The tension on the island increased by the hour.

Its ironic that at this same time, the shadowy rebel legend Petros and a few members of the CCM (Chernarus Communist Militia) arrived on Malden.  Having recently led a successful liberation of Chernarus, Petros knew the residents of Malden would be in need of experienced help. Soon he discovered a resistance group of local residents (including the emerging leader SonofSunTzu) and offered assistance in their struggle. They agreed that action must be taken quickly to liberate the people of Malden and began to plan a response.

The Fapovo Divide: Shadows of Sahrani

The Dust Settled on Malden

The victory on Malden was supposed to end an era of bloodshed. Petros and the elusive Son of Sun Tzu had done what no one thought possible — uniting a scattered resistance to overthrow the Royal Army Corps of Sahrani (RACS) and the Malden Defense Forces alike. Their success sent shockwaves through the region, inspiring whispers of rebellion across the Aegean.

But peace in this world is always temporary. And as Malden rebuilt, the storm clouds gathered once more — this time, over a small and divided island called Fapovo.

An Island Divided

The Federal Republic of Fapovo is an island torn by geography and history. In the southwest, the Fapovo region governs itself through the weak and corrupt Fapovo Governing Council (FGC). In the northeast, Botana Province remains a dependency of the Kingdom of Sahrani, serving as a foothold for royal influence and military projection across the sea.

For nearly a decade, the internal border meant little. Checkpoints stood empty or were manned only for show. Tourists, merchants, citizens and workers passed freely. Oil flowed, factories hummed, and commerce flourished. To the outside world, Fapovo looked like a model of stability in a region defined by turmoil. But beneath that veneer, cracks were spreading fast. 

Corruption and Occupation

The Royal Army Corps of Sahrani (RACS) gradually entrenched itself in Botana under the pretense of “security cooperation.” Outposts became bases, joint exercises became permanent deployments, and “development aid” turned into political control. The FGC, fractured and self-serving, traded silence for Sahrani funding. To the working class, the illusion of prosperity began to fade. Discontent simmered. The Sahrani Liberation Army (SLA) took notice. 

The Return of the Revolutionaries

Operating from offshore bases and clandestine forward positions, the SLA began its campaign to destabilize the Kingdom’s hold on Fapovo. Drawing on hidden stockpiles and loyalist networks across the region they smuggled men, weapons, and propaganda into the southwest. They infiltrated the FGC, stirred anti-Sahrani sentiment, and armed sympathetic militias — preparing for a coordinated strike to reclaim the island from royal influence once and for all.

When the invasion came, it was swift and merciless. SLA amphibious forces stormed the Botana City airfield, cutting off RACS air operations. Simultaneously, SLA armored columns struck inland, capturing the RACS military base and outpost in Beratna, while special forces established a forward outpost near Sharkovo to secure the approaches. The Fapovo Divide had become a warzone overnight. 

ION: The Fourth Front

Amid the chaos, another player re-emerged — ION Services, the modern face of the disavowed Black Element private military company. Officially, they arrived on Fapovo under contracts to “protect Sahrani economic interests.” Unofficially, they were building something far more dangerous: a private army operating under no flag and no oversight.

ION’s roots run deep into Sahrani’s history. Two decades ago, under their old name Black Element, they participated in Operation Royal Flush — a secret mission to eliminate rebel elements and seize chemical weapons in northern Sahrani. When their operatives uncovered the atrocities of Queen Isabella Ximénez and turned against her, they were branded traitors. The fallout forced the company underground and into rebranding.

Now, on Fapovo, ION has returned — not as mercenaries of loyalty, but as architects of chaos. They have established fortified compounds, seized abandoned infrastructure, and built a network of informants and black-market contacts. ION is fighting everyone: RACS, SLA, and even the FIA. To them, the conflict itself is the product — a never-ending cycle of instability that fuels their contracts, funding, and influence.

The Resistance in Ruin

Trapped between three powerful enemies, the Freedom and Independence Army (FIA) has been bled nearly dry. Once the island’s defenders, they now survive as scattered insurgent cells in the mountains and forests. Their supplies are dwindling, their leadership fractured, and their morale fading. Yet hope has a way of returning when least expected.

Word spreads of a victory on distant Malden — of two men who united a resistance and brought down empires. The FIA’s remaining leaders send a desperate encrypted plea across the sea: “The enemy multiplies. We fight three wars at once. Help us achieve what you did for Malden.” 

The Call Answered

Under a moonless sky, a smuggler’s trawler slipped through Fapovo’s shallows. Aboard were Petros, the Son of Sun Tzu, and a handful of hardened Malden veterans — carrying with them only what they could fit below deck: experience, resolve, and a few crates of weapons.

Their mission was as clear as it was impossible: Unite the fractured resistance, Expel the RACS occupation, Crush the SLA invasion,  Neutralize ION’s shadow operations before the entire island burns.

The Divide Deepens

Now, Fapovo stands on the brink. RACS digs in beneath royal banners, fighting to maintain control. SLA forces push inland from their offshore staging grounds, promising “liberation” through fire and blood. ION wages its own private war for profit and dominance.

And the FIA — outnumbered, outgunned, but not yet broken — prepares to rise once more. In this war, no side is innocent. Every commander calls themselves a liberator. Every soldier fights for their own version of peace.

Once again, the world turns its eyes to the resistance. Once again, Petros and Son of Sun Tzu, along with their allies, must become the sword of the people.
